The Tragedy of Evariste Galois...
If you want to get productive, one of the most important thing you need to do is raise your necessity levels (or raise the stakes as the saying goes).
Today I want to share a story about how to raise necessity, it goes something like this…
Back in 1832 there was this amazing French algebraic mathematician named Evariste Galois who loved a lovely young lady and so he proposed to her.
Unfortunately for Evariste this lovely young lady already had a boyfriend who was in the armoury core of the French army, and he was good with pistols.
Upon finding out about Galois’s proposal to his girlfriend this other man challenged Galois to a duel by pistol.
Galois knowing that he was hopeless with pistols was surely to die in this duel.
He also knew he had so many brilliant ideas floating around in his head about algebra that he wanted to write down and so he did…
All that night before his duel he set about and wrote all the ideas and theories on algebraic equations he had in his mind.
All up he wrote 60 pages of theories and notes.
Galois wrote all the way up until the minutes before he went out into the street for the duel.
Unfortunately for Galois he was a poor dueller and he did die in that duel.
However his book of notes were discovered years later.
His theories are to this day still some of the most important basis of mathematical discoveries in Mathematics.
The Takeaway
The point of this story is, that it took something powerful like death to laser focus Galois’s mind.
It did so in such a way that he could bring out the unconscious ideas that he had within him already to create something great.
These ideas have served the world to this day.
We all have a great idea inside of us – we just need to raise the stakes to bring it out.
